SUMMARY:Culture Day Celebration - 2022
DESCRIPTION:Edmonton Multicultural Coalition Association (EMCA) strongly believes that literary and cultural exchanges can be a powerful tool to combat racism\, prejudice\, and stereotypes and cultivate mutual transformation. \nCulture is one of humans’ unique tools to express their intrinsic and extrinsic norms and values. EMCA provides a platform for diverse cultural groups to show some of their elements on this cultural day celebration. A natural outcome will be to appreciate\, understand\, and embrace each other’s culture\, supporting our unique identity of multiculturalism. \nThis September\, in collaboration with Alberta Culture Days\, we will bring together diverse and vibrant ethnocultural communities to translate and recite excerpts from their favourite poems\, stories or songs. By reading and translating texts together\, we aim to engage communities in exploring the most profound emotions and vulnerabilities hidden in our artistic expressions so we better understand each other – we aim to walk the talk\, not just talk the talk. \nCome jump on this joyous literary and cultural bandwagon. Let’s come together to share food\, sing\, read\, and dance to this sweet song of diversity that makes us so unique and vibrant. \nAs the philosopher\, Nietzsche says: “those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”.\n\nJoin us if you hear this music! \n  \nSeptember 24\, 2022 – 3.00 PM – 6.00 PM \nSeptember 25\, 2022 – 1.00 PM – 3.00 PM \nLight refreshments will be served on both days.

SUMMARY:Culture Days Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The two part-evening event “Mapping Cultural Diversity Together” explores community storytelling through art forms. Six Edmonton communities with roots in South Asia\, the Middle East and Africa will come together to share food\, costumes\, culture\, tradition and stories to weave a narrative of multiculturalism in Alberta. Our aim is to uphold and preserve the cultures of different communities while presenting it to the public during the course of the events and to give an opportunity to all participants to learn from one another and understand the cultural differences and similarities. \nDAY 1. Friday\, 24 September\, 2021\, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – by Zoom \nThe focus of our first day is to introduce participants to the meaning behind the foods and fashion our cultures represent. There will be a presentation exploring the bread/staple grains and fashion of Azerbaijan\, Ethiopia\, Eritrea\, Nepal\, Sierra Leone and Turkey followed by small group break-out rooms to share together about our own cultural experiences with food and fashion. The evening will be peppered with songs from around the world. \nDAY 2. Wednesday\, 29 September\, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – by Zoom \nDrawing on the same cultural traditions as Day 1\, Day 2 will focus on dance\, instrumental music\, and fashion through shared videos produced locally as well as from participants’ communities back home. Between the performances\, we will learn about the Ethiopian tradition of coffee ceremony and hair-braiding\, and the Sierra Leone art of scarf tying.
